Where We Came From
It seemed like a dream, too good to be true. The Lord has done great things for us, and we rejoice!
These words paraphrased from Psalm 126: 1-3 describe the beginnings of our first Hope for the Holidays in 2009. Hope members prayed for a way to provide the needed financial support for three particular Presbyterian mission coworkers. Their work with women and children at risk tied in with our local mission efforts here. Prayers are powerful but funds would provide the tools our mission coworkers need to sustain their mission overseas.
Through specific prayer and asking the Lord for guidance, church member Kathy Sorensen was led to Jan Hedberg. Jan originated the Holiday in the Village Fine Craft Sale in 1992 at her home in Jerome. Years later, it was held at the Jerome Civic Center, then the Hoogland, and finally at the Knights of Columbus Hall, where she held her last show in 2008. Growing over sixteen years, her annual craft fair launched the holiday shopping season for many. Following this tradition, Hope for the Holidays is always the first weekend in November. As many fellow artists know, our creative gifts come from our Creator God. What better way to celebrate local creative talents than by offering them in our church building? Jan was enthusiastic and receptive, sharing her talent and resources with us and in essence giving us her blessing to “Just go for it!” Using her expertise, we put together our first event in less than two months! Nineteen artists, including Jan showing her pottery, made our show a success; giving us over $3,000 to support our overseas mission efforts in 2009. Since then, we have funded mission coworkers in Costa Rica, Cameroon, East Asia, South Sudan, Ukraine, the local APL and the L.A.M.B. Institute here in the U.S.
Jan was a true believer, a woman of faith, joy and laughter. I believe her spirit is with us as we continue to pray and follow God’s direction for future Hope for the Holidays. We are thankful that the Lord brought her to us along with the many artists we have come to know and welcome back each year. The art show continues to grow and change, providing more funds each year for our mission projects.
We give thanks to the Lord for his grace and blessings. We thank you for your support in making our mission ‘dream’ a reality.
